Basic statistical data from our surveys may be viewed to the right, there are various tabs below the data that display categorical analysis of the Mindtool survey. Overall, the survey results indicated that the Mindtools considered to be most useful were Search Engines (100%), E-mail (99%), and Word Processing (97%). Below you will find a quick breakdown of individual Mindtools.

 

  • Interpretive Mindtools

Search Engines

The survey results indicated that 100% of respondents found this tool to be useful. The most common uses were for research (85%) and to gather/exchange information (78%).

 

Visualization Mindtools

The survey results indicated that 80% of respondents found this tool to be useful. The most common users were for research (57%), to gather/exchange information (51%) and curiosity (51%).

 

  • Conversation Mindtools

E-Mail

The survey results indicated that 99% of respondents find this tool to be useful.  The most common uses were for communication/meet people (80%) and to gather/exchange information (72%).

 

Discussion Boards

The survey results indicated that 85% of respondents find this tool to be useful.  The most common uses were to gather/exchange information (77%), for communication/meet people (55%), and for research (49%).

 

Blogs

The survey results indicated that 73% of respondents find this tool to be useful.  The most common uses were to gather/exchange information (58%), for communication/meet people (47%), and for research (47%).

 

VOIP

The survey results indicated that 66% of respondents find this tool to be useful.  The most common uses were for communication/meet people (66%), to gather/exchange information (31%), for entertainment (27%).

 

  • Knowledge Mindtools

Word Processing

The survey results indicated that 97% of respondents found this tool to be useful. The most common uses were for research (69%) and to gather/exchange information (65%).

 

Hypermedia

The survey results indicated that 92% of respondents found this tool to be useful. The most common uses was for gather/exchange information (77%) and for research (65%).

 

  • Dynamic Mindtools

Spreadsheets

The survey results indicated that 91% of respondents found this tool to be useful. The most common uses were to gather/exchange information (74%) and for research (64%).

 

Microworlds

The survey results indicated that 70% of respondents found this tool to be useful. The most common uses were for entertainment (45%), to gather/exchange information (38%) and curiosity (36%).

 

Qualitative Conclusions
Findings of our survey indicate typical behaviour among students at the community college level, across the state of  North Carolina. The data collected indicates the technology students and faculty of various age and motivations are using to study and collaborate as a community. If we as future consultants, collaborators and most important users, of new learning spaces can cater and adapt to support for these activities in our spaces of learning, then true student engagement may be begin.
